About the Academic Career Conversations tool

This Academic Career Conversation tool is focused on developing academic careers within a university environment, rather than in the wider HE environment, or in business or industry. The intention is to support academics at many stages of their careers, for example post-doctorate, early career researcher, just arriving from business or industry into academia, or an academic aspiring to develop a rounded portfolio of academic activities. During our research, we discovered that the aspiration to develop a rounded portfolio of good quality academic activities can be an aspiration for a professor just as for an early career researcher, as often academics focus on one dimension of activity related to their discipline or specialism to the exclusion or detriment of others.

Regardless of the starting point, we discovered that academics at all career stages have many similar needs when it comes to engaging in conversation about their careers.
